There are several things to consider when trying to decide how extensive your roof repair is going to be. Your decision may be easily swayed by the extent of the problems that are caused by your roof. However, in most cases your roof will leave you with subtle clues as to the extent of the repair that’s needed:

One important clue is moisture. Take a look at your interior walls and see if there are moisture marks or brown stains. Also, be sure to check if the paint is peeling. These can be signs of a roof leak. Depending on the severity, you may only need minor repairs for a short-term fix. In more severe cases it might be a good idea getting your roof replaced.

You should also take a look to see if you have missing or damaged shingles. There are several factors that may cause shingles to go missing or get torn or curled. In any case, you should have your roof looked at to determine if it’s a matter of minor repair or if it’s damaged enough to require a new roof.

Age is another factor to look at when deciding on getting your roof replaced or repaired. It’s important to know what the expected lifespan of your roof is so that you can determine if it’s about time to get a roofing contractor out to look at it. Different types of roofs will have different lifespans. Your average asphalt shingle roof should last around 15 to 20 years.
